The Importance of Exfoliation

Updated: Jul 4, 2021

Exfoliation is a natural process. Your skin technically is aware of shedding dead skin cells about every 30 days. But that does not mean we can't help the process along. Mechanical exfoliation uses physical grit, like a scrub, to slough away dead and dry cells from the outermost layer of your skin. Once the dead skin is removed, dull skin regains its radiance, and often has a glow and can feel supple to the touch.

Exfoliation is an essential part of a successful skincare routine. Once the dead skin has been scrubbed away, the skin is able to breathe and make way for other products to come through, thus achieving a healthier-looking skin.

When it comes to scrubs, there are a host of mechanical exfoliants that we can choose from, such as coffee scrubs. But the most popular ones out there are sugar and salt scrubs. But each have their own benefits and it's up to us to decide which is most suited for our skin.

Raw fine sugar makes an excellent exfoliant, and since the particles are less grittier (and thus less abrasive), sugar is commonly found in a number of body scrubs to exfoliate dead surface skin cells and reveal the glowing skin underneath. This exfoliant is also known to help draw water into the skin, therefore boasting benefits, such as hydration and gentleness.

Salt, on the other hand, may be a little harsher than scrubs. However, they have an added bonus in the fact that salt helps to pull toxins away from the body. This is why salt scrubs are so beloved by those who experience muscle soreness from athletic activities and those who are trying to detoxify. Salt scrubs are good for areas of the body that the skin is dryer such as the feet, hands, elbows, and legs. Moreover, salt (depending on where they come from, such as the sea or the Himalayas), is jam-packed with minerals that help in the detox process.

At the end of the day, you know your own skin and know what it needs. If you are in need of detoxification using minerals, salt scrub is for you but sugar scrubs are great for dehydrated and sensitive skin.
